Mel Strikes Mayan Gold In Spite of Himself

The success of the latest film by action movie star/director and boozing anti-Semite Mel Gibson further affirms the adage that there is no such thing as bad publicity.
Drunken rants about Jews aside, Mel still has the ability to pack a theater -- even when shooting a blood-soaked historical epic with unknown actors in a dead language.
The film, Apocalypto, topped the box office when it was released in the U.S. in early December.
While not breaking the records set by Gibson's previous directorial release, the controversial biblical screed The Passion of the Christ, ticket sales and reviews were better than many expected.
Apocalypto brought in $14.2 million during its opening weekend.
Set in the jungles of Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula in the waning years of the Mayan civilization, the movie tells the intense story of a young warrior struggling to return to his family.
As with The Passion, Apocalypto has drawn attention for its depictions of graphic violence.
The film contains no established Hollywood stars and all dialogue is delivered in a Mayan dialect.
Gibson's own personal problems of the last year -- his DUI arrest, anti-Semitic outburst and retreat into rehab -- only seem to add to the unlikelihood of a hit.
On the contrary, say some entertainment industry analysts.
With Gibson's name in the news -- albeit for all the wrong reasons -- distributor Disney opted to play up rather than hide the troubled director's involvement.
"A movie about Mayan civilization was never destined to be a big hit, let alone a number one movie," said Paul Degarabedian, president of Media by Numbers, a box-office tracking company.
"But through Disney's marketing, which highlights Mel Gibson, I think the strategy paid off."
