Madonna Defends Controversial Adoption

Like the famous line in her '80s pop hit "Papa Don't Preach," Madonna is keeping her baby.
The singer took to the airwaves last week to defend her decision to adopt an 18-month-old boy named David from an orphanage in the African country of Malawi.
Madonna has faced a storm of controversy since the story broke that she had circumvented Malawi's complex adoption laws and returned to England with David in tow.
Malawi's high court granted Madonna and her husband, British film producer Guy Richie, an interim adoption order on Oct. 12.
More than 67 human rights groups have filed suit arguing that Malawi's laws forbid international adoptions unless the prospective parents have lived in the country for 18 months.
David's father, 32-year-old vegetable farmer Yohane Banda, left the infant at the orphanage after the death of his birth mother.
The controversy took an unexpected turn when it was reported that Banda, who is illiterate, did not understand that the adoption would be permanent.
Banda's concession that he still wished the adoption to go forward did little to stave off the singer's critics.
She pleaded her case October 25 on Ophrah Winfrey's talk show.
"He had severe pneumonia and could hardly breathe," Madonna told Oprah.
"I was in a state of panic because I didn't want to leave him in the orphanage, because they didn't have medication to take care of him.
He's still a little bit ill, but he's much better than he was."
Madonna says she plans to bring David back to Malawi every four years for visits.
