Yankee Pitcher Killed in NYC Plane Crash

Fans, players and baseball officials mourned the loss last week of the New York Yankees' Cory Lidle.
The 34-year-old pitcher died October 13 when the small plane he was piloting slammed into a high-rise apartment building in Manhattan.
Lidle was a student pilot and his flight instructor was also killed in the accident.
"All of baseball is shocked and terribly saddened by the sudden and tragic passing of Cory Lidle," Major League Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig said in a written statement.
Officials from the Federal Aviation Administration are investigating the cause of the crash, which appears to have been an accident.
Lidle was an enthusiastic student pilot who often spoke to friends of his new hobby.
"He was telling me about this plane he had just bought, telling me about how great it was to fly," said Yankees bullpen coach Joe Kerrigan.
"It just spilled over. It just oozed out of him.
He did it with his cars, with his golf, by playing poker and he did it by flying."
Lidle was remembered a methodical player who favored throwing curves rather than blazing fast balls and who studied his opponents before each game.
He was shorter than most of his fellow pitchers, but made up for what he lacked in inches with a toughness.
His final visit to the mound came October 8 as a relief pitcher in the Yankees' defeat to the Detroit Tigers in the first round playoff series.
Witnesses to the fatal crash said the four-seat plane appeared to lose control before crashing into the building and bursting into flames.
Still skittish from the September 11 attacks, many New Yorkers have renewed calls for tighter restrictions on air traffic over the city.
