Thousands Flee Violence in
Lebanon
以黎衝突 黎巴嫩紛紛撤僑
Thousands of foreign
nationals fled violence in Lebanon last
week.
A fleet of
vehicles that included military ships,
helicopters and cruise liners ferried families,
tourists and students from Lebanese ports to
nearby Cyprus.
Meanwhile, several countries
put small security forces on the ground to
protect their citizens and maintain
order.
The
migration of foreign nationals follows intense
fighting between Israel and the terror group
Hezbollah, which is based in southern
Lebanon.
The violence began with the
kidnapping of two Israeli soldiers by Hezbollah,
which is demanding the release of dozens of its
members held in Israeli prisons.
The kidnapping sparked a quick
military response from Israel, which has
included the bombing and shelling of targets
within Lebanon.
Hezbollah retaliated
with rocket attacks on several Israeli
cities.
A host of nations
sent ships to retrieve their citizens.
Nearly 1,200 U.S. citizens
departed Beirut for Cyprus Wednesday, July 21,
aboard the Greek cruise ship Orient
Queen.
About 1,300 British
citizens were loaded into the HMS
Bulwark.
Diplomatic authorities
reported that there are approximately 35
Taiwanese residents living in Lebanon, though
many were out of the country on summer
holiday.
Most evacuees said they were
grateful for the assistance, though some
complained about delays and conditions aboard
some of the ships.
Food was scarce at times and
conditions crowded, with many forced to sleep on
deck.
Ashley Marinaccio, 20,
of Long Branch, New Jersey, described the ferry
she was evacuated on as "a floating refugee
camp" with few places to sleep, five toilets and
a short supply of toilet paper.
