Air Strike Ends Life of
Iraq's Number One
Insurgent
空襲行動終結伊拉克頭號恐怖份子
In the early hours of
June 8, a pair of American F-16 fighter jets
over Iraq dropped their deadly payloads on an
indistinct farmhouse north of
Baghdad.
The attack
ended the life of one of the country's most
reviled insurgent leaders.
The shattered remains of Abu
Musab al-Zarqawi, leader of the organization
dubbed "Al Qaeda in Iraq," were identified hours
later with the help of fingerprint
records.
Allied and
local leaders hailed al-Zarqawi's demise as an
important symbolic, if not decisive, victory in
the continued struggle to bring order to a
country wracked by violence.
The strike brings to a close
another chapter in an ongoing cycle of death and
terror which has cost the lives of thousands of
coalition soldiers, foreign contractors and
local Iraqis.
The 39-year-old Jordanian
terror leader bore a $25 million bounty on his
head for his part in coordinating a string of
bloody attacks, bombings, kidnappings and
beheadings.
Local
Shiites bore the brunt of al-Zarqawi's reign of
terror, which included the deadly bombing of a
sacred Shiite mosque.
Zarqawi is dead," said U.S.
President George W. Bush, "but the difficult and
necessary mission in Iraq continues. We can
expect the terrorists and insurgents to carry on
without him."
