Award-winning director Ang Lee returned home this week on the heels of a new triumph.
The Taiwanese director of Oscar-winning hits like "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" was back in Taipei for the premier of his latest work, "Brokeback Mountain," which opened in Taiwan just days after the film earned four Golden Globe awards.
  金獎導演李安在奪下金球獎後本週旋即返回家鄉。這位曾執導奧斯卡得獎賣座片《臥虎藏龍》的臺灣導演為新作的首映返臺。《斷背山》在贏得金球獎四項大獎之後數日即在臺上映。
In spite of its controversial subject matter -- a decades-spanning homosexual love affair between two Wyoming ranch hands -- the film broke records in the traditionally conservative U.S. market.
It recently logged the highest per-screen gross sales of any non-animated film.
"Brokeback Mountain" opened to sold-out audiences in Taiwan without generating the same level of controversy as it has stateside.
  儘管主題頗具爭議──兩名懷俄明州的牛仔長達數十年的同志戀情──本片在傳統的保守美國市場中仍創下多項紀錄。它最近寫下非動畫影片中最高的單廳平均票房紀錄。《斷背山》在臺上映座無虛席，但該片在臺灣的爭議性不像在美國那麼高。
Lee maintains that "Brokeback Mountain" appeals to Asian audiences because it taps into the local moviegoer's love of romantic themes.
"Feelings are the same everywhere, Asians can accept that too," he said.
"The most touching (thing about the story) is that love is something that one can never explain."
  李安成功地使《斷背山》吸引亞洲觀眾，因為它充份發揮了當地電影愛好者所喜愛的浪漫愛情主題，他說「感情沒有地域之分，亞洲人也可以接受它，這部電影最令人感動的就是──愛是一種永遠無法解釋的東西」。
Lee told the Associated Press that he was more concerned about how American audiences would react.
"(If), as a foreigner, you touch on a subject that Americans themselves don't dare touch, what will the reception be?" he said.
  李安告訴美聯社他更關心美國觀眾的反應，他說「作為一個外國人，你碰觸了一個連美國人自己都視為禁忌的題材，那他們的反應將會如何呢？」
After taking home four Golden Globes, "Brokeback Mountain" has been tipped to clean up at this year's Oscars.
Academy award nominations will be announced January 31 and the awards will be handed out March 5.
